On Tuesday, 16th May, a group of eight Year 5 boys went to the Grimsby Town Cricket Club to compete in a Y5 Mixed Kwik Cricket Competition, with 11 other local schools. After a warm-up of practising their bowling and catching skills, the teams were put into four groups consisting of 3 teams.
Each school had to play against the other two teams in their group. Saint. Mary’s won both their matches; the first game 44 runs to 28 runs and the second 22 runs to -6 runs, putting them in first position in their group and through to the semi-final stage, playing the winners of Group 2, St. Martins. After a really close, hard-fought match, Saint Mary’s lost the game 26 runs to 14 runs. However, the team still have one match to play to decide third and fourth places (date to be arranged).
All of the boys can be very pleased with their performance at their first cricket competition. They displayed some fine cricketing skills; excellent bowling; great fielding, with some fantastic catches, and good batting (a couple of boys scoring sixes in all games). The boys were really enthusiastic, thoroughly enjoyed the competition and were a credit to Saint Mary’s. Well done.
