Intra School Competitions

In Saint Mary’s we think it is important to provide all children with the opportunities to compete in a sport. Therefore, at the end of every half term the children are given the opportunity to compete against each during intra school competitions in order to win the house cup. We aim to provide these competitions in order to raise the profile of sport in school, encourage team work within the houses and promote the school games values to our children too. In this section you will see images of the children taking part in these competitions and find out which houses won which events! Will it be Bosco, Soubirous, Lisieux or Assisi?

  • Year 1 will play dodge ball as they have been focussing on moving and passing.
  • Bench ball for year 2 for the same reasons.
  • Coach and TA need to referee and record points by tallying on clipboard.

Unfortunately, because of the poor weather conditions on Thursday 19th October, the Year 5 and 6 competitions had to be changed to bench ball competitions and done in the school hall. All children who took part still had a fabulous time and earned their teams points. Please see the scores below:

Autumn Term 2

Intra school Competition – Indoor Athletics

During Autumn Term 2 the children have been doing indoor athletics with Mr Osborne and Mr Bakes in their PE lessons. With this in mind the PE intra school competition for this half term is Indoor Athletics. There will be two weeks of events happening in which children will have the chance to get their team points. The first week will be field events and the second will be track events. Please see below how these events will be set up and who won overall!

Field events week

2 events will take place at a time. i.e long jump and high jump. Also boys will compete against boys and girls vs girls. Use colour cones to represent houses.

score system is 1st place=4, 2nd 3 points, 3rd place = 2 points and 4th place = 1 point.

1. Long Jump and high jump - use skipping ropes or cones to mark long jump. Players get more points for jumping over each rope.  Will work best if 2 houses do each event then swap over. Use paper on wall at various heights to score points for high jump e.g each house gets x4 pieces of paper to try touch when they jump. Highest is 4 lowest is 1. 2 houses at a time and quick rotation of players.

2. Javelin and shot putt(bean bag throw for year 1 and 2.

Boys on javelin in houses x4

Girls on shot putt in houses x4 - swap.

Ta marks one event coach the other

One group throws at a time, furthest receives most points 4,3,2,1 etc.

3.  Speed bounce and chest push (x2 houses on each event)

Speed bounce - players race to 10 from each house, Fastest player receives x4 points, 2nd 3points etc.

Chest push - large ball and push from chest for distance. Could use cones for markers 1,2,3,4 points depending how far they get. Or alternatively stick to 4 points for winner 1 for last place. Again boys vs boys in houses and girls vs girls.

Track events

If we can get outside we could potentially add a 400/200m for year 5 and 6

All races in houses boys v boys and girls vs girls.

1. Sprint race - using start position

2. Sprint race with batons - relay

3. Sprint hurdles

4. Circular relay with baton (if outside)

5. Obstacle relay (sprint jump hurdle x5 speed bounces and back)

6. Movement relay - any way of moving except running.

7. Balance relay - use bean bags on head

8. Skipping race

As always, point will be awarded extra to those children who are showing our school games values and points will be lost for those children who do not show these values too.

Spring 1

Intra School Competition - Gymnastics

During Spring 1, the children have been learning how to create floor sequences in their gymnastics lessons. In order to show off these skills, the children competed in their intra school competition in gymnastics. The children split up into their house groups to come up with their own sequences to earn house points.  There were four stations the children had to complete. Station 1: complete a 5 part sequence, Station 2: 2 tables and maths to complete  a sequence, Station 3: benches and mats to complete a sequence and Station 4: 2 mats to complete a 10 part sequence. Demo players earned an extra 5 points and the star pupil earned 10 points too. The scores can be see below:

Spring Term 2

Intra school Competition – Hockey/ Dodge ball

During Spring 2, the children have been learning invasion games skills and techniques and putting these into practise in games of hockey and dodge ball. In order to show off these skills further, the children in KS2 competed in their intra school competition in hockey while the KS1 children played against each other in dodge ball. The children were split up into their house groups to compete against each other in their competitions. Each goal that was scored was worth 1 point, a win was worth 10 points and a draw was worth 5 points. There were also bonus points to teams who were showing good team work skills and were helping each other while points were subtracted from teams who did not conform to the school games values that we try to abide by. Ultimate Dodgeball

22/05/18

DAY 2 of Healthy week! Today the children in Saint Mary’s took part in their intra school competition ,the British Heart Foundation’s Ultimate Dodge ball. Children were able to come into school wearing anything red for a small donation of £1 and also had face paint for 50p! After they got on their war paint, the children then got to take part in the dodge ball competition against the other people in their houses. The kids had an amazing time raising money for a charity that raises awareness of keeping our hearts healthy! We are not sure on our final total but children who have been sponsored are encouraged to bring in their money before Friday morning so it can all be counted. Thank you to all of the parents and carers who continue to support us and well done to all of the children who took part.
