Personal Challenge

Did you know that your child should exercise for 60 minutes every day in order to be classed as physically active? Did you also know that this is the first generation who are more likely to die before the age of their parents because of childhood obesity? These shocking findings has resulted in the Govenment taking action. The Government Childhood Obesity Plan has set out the ambition for all children to achieve one hour of physical activity every day, with schools being responsible for delivering 30 of these active minutes. 

In Saint Mary's, we believe that it is important for all children to feel involved and encouraged to try their hardest. With all of this in mind, we have decided to set children personal challenges in order to keep them active for 30 minutes a day. Please see below what we are putting into place.


The Golden Mile

The Golden Mile is a safe, simple and measurable health & physical activity initiative accessible to all age groups regardless of ability.

We aim to inspire and encourage participants with a focus on fun, rewarding personal achievement and healthy competition.

Children will take part in the Golden Mile once a week during a break time where they will have 10 minutes to try and run, jog or walk a mile or count as many laps of the field or playground as they can. Each week they will track their laps and try to beat their time or laps every time. 

Sports Leaders

During lunch times the Sports Leaders or SSOC will invite and encourage children to take part personal challenges. They will time and track children's scores as they take part in activities such as: speed bounce, climbing wall, skippping, catching a ball, star jumps, hoops etc. The children will be invited every week to join them on the playground to beat their personal challenges every week. This will encourage children to be more active and the sports values: determination and self belief.
