Sports Leaders

For a couple of weeks we will be having Mr Hanson came into school on a lunchtime to train up our new sports leaders ready for the rest of summer term and next year! He taught them lots of fun activities to play with children of all ages and skills in being a good sports leader. The children will then use these skills at lunch times when they take over the old sports leaders jobs. Here are some images of the children having a great time learning with Mr Hanson.

Sports Leadership Conference

01/11/17 – Leadership Conference

Today a group of Year 5 children were taken to Grimsby Institute to take part in a Sports Leadership Conference to aid them in their sports leader abilities. To begin with, the children met a Grimsby Town Football player called James McKeown who spoke to them about his success story. He told them all about how they should never give up, work hard and make sacrifices to achieve their dreams and goals. The aims of the conference were to: develop them as young leaders, develop them as young people to be good role models for others, to be the voice of all children in school for PE and sports. The children were split up into 4 groups. The first group were called the ‘young leaders’. Margarita and Amelia were chosen because they are confident speakers so their activities were all aimed around showing them how to encourage others within school to live a healthy lifestyle, how to be a good leader and ambassador for others. The second group were called the ‘media team’. Kiara and Daisy were up in the classroom discussing the features of a good sports article and how to describe sports events in an interesting way for the PE newsletters that we give out every half term. The third group were called ‘coaches’. Joshua and Michael were given activities in which they used the space, used equipment and how to instruct other children for a successful activity at lunch time. The final group were the ‘physical activity group’. Anabella and Italia were shown new, fun, interesting activities that they can do at a lunch time for the children of our school. After, they all reconvened as a whole team to share their new ideas that they had learnt. They discussed how we could improve sports and PE within our school and prepared a presentation for all of the other schools. All children got up and spoke in the presentation, sharing their new ideas and showing great confidence! Mrs Ostrowska was so impressed with their behaviour, they really represented Saint Mary’s fabulously! Well done guys.
