Swimming and Water Safety

The National Curriculum states that:

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Therefore, taking this into consideration, we are providing our Year 4 children with the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons in June. With the Sports Premium Funding being doubled, we have also decided to spend some of this extra money on those children in Year 5 who have not yet managed to pass their 25m badge too. These lessons have been held in March and a further 7 children have now achieved their 25m badges. Below are the results from the Y4 swimming lessons from 2016/17 and the results from the Y5 extra swimming lessons from 2017/18.
