During w/c 18th September 2017, each class held a 'Meet the Teacher Welcome Meeting'. If you were not able to attend, we have attached the Powerpoint from the meeting. This gives you all the information you need to know about being in this class this year. We also sent home a Summary Information Sheet and these are attached too.

Author Visit

On Wednesday 1st November, the children in Year 5 received a visit from the author, John Crawley.  He started by placing flags around the classroom and the children had to identify which flag belonged to which country.  John explained to the children that the stories he writes are about children from all over the world.  He then read two of his short stories to the children from his book “Great Rescues” while some of the children read dialogue parts.

Today in computing, the year 5 children have started their new topic 'we are cryptographers'. In their first lesson the children discussed how people used to communicate with each other at great distance without the use of the internet. After that, they were shown the semaphore code and had to decipher a message using their reference sheets. Once they completed that, they then created their own messages which the class guessed.

English - Delivery from Space

Today, Year 5 had a very strange letter delivered to them from space! Mrs Britteon rushed down to year 5 to bring the letter that had come in a special delivery. When we opened letter we found it was from the Man on the Moon, an astronaut called Sam who is stuck in space. In order for us to write letters back to him the children spent their English lesson coming up with a  story map in order to learn his letter off by heart. Here are some pictures of them practising.

In English today the children read an extract from a book by Pie Corbett called ‘Alien Landing’. They then worked together in their groups to identify different features and techniques the author had used, such as interesting words, personification, adverbs and similes, highlight those features and explain why he had used them.

25/09/17 – Today Year 5 have been learning about plural possessive apostrophes. The children started off with playing a little board game to decide whether not the sentences were plural or possessive. Here are some pictures of them playing the games in action.

In Art Year 5 have been drawing pictures of the moon using chalks and pastels. They first looked at different pictures to see what the surface of the moon looked like. Then they had to draw pictures, adding structure and shade with chalks and pastels, to show the surface of the moon and how craters look on the moon.

Greek Workshop

In Topic Y5 are learning about Ancient Greece.  On Friday, 1st December, Year 5 took part in a Greek Workshop to look at Greek artefacts and learn about Greek life.  The children were split into five groups and each group was given a number of artefacts to examine and discuss.  The groups each had a report sheet to complete, thinking about how was it made?  What was it made of?  Also, what was it used for and is it like anything we use today?  The children then had to think about any questions they wanted to find out about the objects, which they then cross referenced with the information leaflet provided.  They then sketched, labelled and wrote information about the objects.

As well as this they looked at Greek costumes and some children were able to try some costumes on.  Also, the children looked at some Ancient Greek musical instruments (the “Seistron” – rattle – and the Cymbals) and listened to some Greek music.

To finish the workshop the children were given the opportunity to sample some Greek food: olives, fresh and dried figs, pitta bread with olive oil, honey, grapes and feta cheese.

The children had an enjoyable time and were interested in finding out all about Ancient Greek life.

Morse Code

Today the Y5 children have been continuing their computing lessons by cracking messages in Morse Code. The children learnt all about who invented Morse Code and why it was invented. The children then started to write their own messages and practise sending these messages through using a torch.

QR Codes

Today the children in year 5 have used QR codes and the laptops to research about the Ancient Greek's religion and the Gods and Goddesses they worshipped.  Here are some pictures of them hard at work with their partners getting ready to present their findings to the class.

Today in computing the children in year 5 have been learning about the importance of having a password which contains a range of symbols in order to ensure it does not get found out. We discussed why we have passwords, where they might use passwords and what could happen if passwords are leaked. We watched the video attached of the Barclay's advert warning us how to check if a website is secure and did some investigating of our own in which we found websites such as: amazon, eBay and Mataram are secure but surprisingly Argos did not come up as secure. Take a look at the video we watched to keep yourself safe from internet fraud over the holiday season!

Christmas Fun

This week the children in Year 5 have had lots of fun as they have worked SO hard over the past term. On Monday the children had their Christmas party, which meant they could come into school in their party clothes. They had lots of fun playing games in the classroom and then went into the hall with Year 6 to play some more party games and have a disco. On Wednesday the children had their behaviour treat which they chose to be a ‘pizza pyjama party’. The children enjoyed watching Arthur Christmas while lounging in their pyjamas and eating popcorn and pizza. Happy Christmas to all, have a safe break.
