Mrs Ballard our Year 6 teacher has settled in well to her new classroom. In Year 6 we will been learning lots of new knowledge and skills. Over the course of the year, we have an exciting menu of learning opportunities as we prepare ourselves for the next stage of our education.

Lord God, Thank you for this opportunity to learn new skills and stretch my understanding. Thank you for guiding me through this time of study into the final exams. I lay before you all the hopes and fears I have about the outcome.

History

Year 6 enjoyed a visit from a local historian with artifacts from WW2

Writing

Year 6 have been learning new skills to incorporate into their independent writing. They have been focussing on journalism through newspaper reporting and through media on news channels. Looking in detail at the differences between facts and opinions. They have learned and practiced new grammar skills of past and present progressive verb forms, apostrophes with singular and plural nouns and connectives of similar and contrasting ideas. The children then wrote an independent newspaper article that looked at xenotransplantation which was linked to their science topic.

Art

Year 6 studied the work of Starry night by Vincent Van Gogh. They looked at different colours, textures, paints, pastels focusing on harmonious colours and feelings. They looked at different brush strokes and created numerous pieces of work.

During this reading lesson, Year 6 have been practicing their prediction skills by identifying key evidence from the text to support their answers. They prepare by reading the text in partners for peer reading and use their highlighters to identify key words and the evidence that mirrors this in the text.

Year 6 – Maths reconsigning numbers to 10,000,000

In P.E. we have been learning a new game called Dodgeball Rumble, working on our evading and deflecting skills as well as working as a team to win the game.

Science this term – Year 6 knowing that Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one transparent material to another.

During their English Literacy lesson, the children have been working independently on their first draft for their double spread for a non-chronological factual report linked to their Geography topic on Climate Change. They have focused on the key features of an introduction, sub-headings, illustrations and set paragraphs of key information in conjunction with ensuring their language features learned in previous lessons have been included-parenthesis, fronted adverbials, punctuation and descriptive language. They have referred back to key information and knowledge from previous lessons and in conjunction have used their IT skills to research any further information that they require.

In art we have been learning about Surrealist art and artist such as Salvador Dali. We have been practicing putting images together in unexpected ways.

In Cooking and Nutrition in Design and Technology, Year 6 have been learning about the nutritional values of specific food.  The children made wholemeal bread rolls and compared the ingredients and nutritional value with wholemeal sliced bread from a supermarket.  Even though they enjoyed both breads, the children said that they preferred their homemade bread rolls.

The children learned how yeast works, how to mix, knead, shape and prove dough and how to bake and cool the bread.

Year 6 were very lucky to be visited by a local woman, Sarah Palmer, who is an illustrator for books. Her newest project was to illustrate for a new book called Grim a legend, a truth and a secret, which is historical fictional Viking book on Grimsby. The children participated in art skills from their own creative minds to depict similar images and feelings from different parts of the story taking part in a local competition and the successful winners would win a prize and their work displayed publicly.

The children in year 6 visited the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln as part of their WWII History topic. They took part in a day of workshop activities that increased their understanding and knowledge with a hands-on learning experience using real-life stories, from those who were there, and artefacts used by Bomber Command in World War II. Their workshops focus on remembrance, sacrifice, suffering and bravery and help bring to life the events of the era.At the exhibition, the children had access to interactive displays activities and first-hand experiences to tell the story of Bomber Command and those affected by their actions.A guided tour of the Spire, Memorial Walls and Peace Gardens with an expert tour guide.

The year 6 children have been designing and programming commands into scratch and creating their own digital characters that follow commands set in code.

The children have been researching and learning about WW2 during their history lessons whilst in tangent been reading and listening to two class stories from that era; Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carrol and Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. They used a conscience alley to debate whether it was WW1 or Hitler that caused WW2. They have delved into the Battle of Britain, The Blitz, looking at daily life in particular rationing.

The children have continued to work on their team skills and individual abilities during competitive games that look at balance, coordination, speed and tactics. Through games such as capture the flag, Team rumble dodgeball and blindfolded tag.
