We had a spectacular World Book Day at Saint Mary’s this year! We started our day off by listening to a story of our choice read by an adult around school. We then went back to our classes and designed a new gift voucher for World Book Day 2026 – three of the best designs from each class will be submitted to a national competition, so wish us luck! Also, one design for KS1 and one design for KS2 were chosen to win a £10 book token.
Each class was also tasked with retelling or acting out a story and the winning classes – Year 6 and Reception – got to wear their own clothes on Monday 10th March. We rounded out the day by joining up with a partner class and reading a story together before our gift voucher winners for KS1 and KS2 were announced – well done to Rithil and Iyanu!
Overall, the children said that it was a great day and they enjoyed it very much. Here is a selection of photos from the day for you to browse…
Our librarians have been working tirelessly during their lunchtimes for the last few weeks to get the library organised and scanned into our brand new library management system, ready for classes to just come straight in and scan to check out or check in books so that we can keep track of our books more easily (teachers are currently keeping a written/typed log of which child has which books). We are almost ready to launch thanks to these children! They have also decided on categories for our books and labelled the shelves to make it easier for classes to return their books to the correct places.
So, a huge, huge thank you to Daniel, Rebeca-Maria, Daniella and Alfie for helping to stamp, scan and organise our library!
We launched our book club back in October and it has been a roaring success! Thank you to the children for continually coming each week and being excited about the library and the new books that are coming onto the shelves each week. Here are some photos of some of the regular Book Club visitors enjoying a book in our new seating setup.
Nursery have been enjoying reading and exploring storybooks. They have been using puppets to retell their stories. Take a look below to see how they have been getting on.
Year 3 are loving reading the classic Roald Dahl novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Here is a preview of some of the fantastic written work that they have been doing, practicing their retrieval skills.
Year 2 went on their first visit to the library this year. They really enjoyed looking at all of the new books we have added this year before choosing a book to take home to read for pleasure.
Year 5 have really been enjoying reading Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. They have just finished reading Chapter 5 and are excited to see what happens next for Michael, Stella and the Peggy Sue! To summarise and sequence what they have read, Year 5 were asked to create a comic strip to show the main events of Chapter 5.
