Arithmetic tests
In Science, the children have been learning all about mammals and have enjoyed exploring the human skeleton, discovering how our bones support and protect our bodies. In Geography, Year 3 have been fascinated by volcanoes and learned about how they erupt and the impact they can have. Linking this to our English work, the children are now writing diary accounts imagining they were present during the volcanic eruption of Pompeii, using descriptive language to bring this dramatic event to life.
In Art, we are exploring the work of American Modernism artist Georgia O’Keefe. We will learn about picking the right media and tools to create different effects in our drawings. At the end of this unit children will create their own flower drawing using their new skills. In Science we be learning about forces and magnets. In our first ever physics topic we will investigate how friction is a force when two objects are moving against each other and how different surfaces can affect friction. We will also explore the magnetic force and discover which objects are attracted to magnets.

Year 3 have been recognising and describing characteristics of different aspects of home life.
In Year 3, in science, our current topic is Forces and Magnets. So far, the children have enjoyed investigating friction by using ramps, toy cars and a variety of different surfaces. They explored how friction can affect the speed of an object and the distance it travels. We have also used Newton meters to measure the amount of force needed to lift a range of objects from around our classroom. In RE, we have been learning about Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ letter encouraging us to care for the Earth, our common home. The children have thought carefully about the responsibility we all have to look after God’s creation. They created thoughtful pledges and posters explaining the different ways in which we can be stewards of God’s creation and make positive choices to care for our world. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of number lines up to 1,000. The children have been learning how to identify and place numbers accurately on number lines with different intervals. We took our learning outside the classroom and worked together to create our own large number lines, helping us to apply our place value knowledge in a practical and engaging way.
In Science Year 3, we concluded our Physics topic, Forces and Magnets, by carrying out a range of practical investigations. The children explored the magnetic properties of different materials and everyday classroom objects, making predictions and testing their ideas. We also investigated the strength of different magnets, comparing their effectiveness and developing our scientific enquiry skills through hands-on experiments. In History, Year 3 have enjoyed travelling back in time to explore the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age! We have discovered how people lived during these fascinating periods and how tools and inventions gradually developed to make everyday life easier. The children have also explored how these early discoveries and inventions have influenced the way we live today, helping us appreciate just how much life has changed over time!
In RE, Year 3 have learnt so much through our Branch 1 topic, Creation and Covenant. We have explored the importance of caring for God’s creation and reflected on our big question: “How could caring for the world change the world for the better?” We studied Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, both written by Pope Francis, and discussed how we can put his teachings into practice. The children also created their own thoughtful pledges, sharing the small but meaningful actions they can take in their everyday lives to protect our planet and care for others.
