At St Mary’s Academy, we believe PE is integral to the well-being and happiness of our pupils and it is our responsibility to introduce children to the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. We pride ourselves on our inclusive curriculum where we offer a broad range of activities through high quality teaching. We encourage healthy competition, resilience and perseverance in our school through a range of inter and intra-school events. We promote our staff to be role models and encourage our positive ethos to PE in all of our teaching.
2024/2025 Sporting Events/Competitions
Y4 Dance Festival – March 2025
Children from Year 4 were chosen to take part in this festival to engage new audiences. Children learnt dance routines and the importance of stretching before and after dancing. Four children were also awarded with medals for their motivation and enthusiasm throughout the morning.
Let Girls Play – March 2025
Ten girls were chosen to represent our school at a national football festival. The event theme was to engage new audiences and teaching those that took part basic skills needed to play football.
Year 3 Active Maths – March 2025
Children from Year 3 attended an active maths event where they learnt different ways to incorporate physical activity within their maths lessons.
Y5/6 Athletics Final – February 2025
The athletic team returned to the develop final competing against five other local schools. They took part in the same activities and came fifth overall. Amazing result to reach the final, well done!
Most Active Class (Advent 2); Year 5 – February 2025
n Advent 2, Y5 were the most active class in gaining steps. As a prize they were taken to Rock Up in Hull. This was a fantastic opportunity to not only reward being the most active but also promoting the importance of being active. It was a fantastic morning and it gave the students an opportunity to do something that they may not normally get to experience. It was enjoyed by all, well done Y5
Year 6 Get Glowing – February 2025
Twelve children were chosen to represent our school at this indoor Get Glowing festival. The event theme was to engage children’s interest in sport with the intent to increase motivation within young people to be physically active.

Ten children were chosen to represent our school at this indoor Get Glowing festival. The event theme was to engage children’s interest in sport with the intent to increase motivation within young people to be physically active.
Years 5 & 6 Dodgeball – February 2025
Six children were chosen to represent our school at this indoor dodgeball festival. The event theme was to develop children’s skills and interest in the sport with the intent to help support fair competition and foster social connections.
KS2 Kurling – January 2025
Two children were chosen for a New Age Kurling compete event. This event is a pathway to the county final.
This was an event for our more competitive children and the boys did themselves proud achieving second place in their group.
Y5/Y6 Cheerleading Festival – January 2025
Twelve children were chosen to represent our school at this cheerleading festival. The event theme was to develop and engage with the intent to engage new audiences.
Y3/Y4 Indoor Athletics – January 2025
Eighteen children were chosen to represent our school at this indoor athletics festival. The event theme was to develop and compete with the intent to help support individual development within sport.
Panathlon – November 2024
Eight children were chosen to represent our school at this indoor Panathlon event. The event theme was to engage children’s interest in sport and focus on targeting young people who would benefit from becoming more physically active and to develop a focus on the School Games Values. The intent was to improve health and wellbeing, physical, social and emotional wellbeing. They achieved 5th place, well done!
Most Active Class (Advent 1); Year 2 – November 2024
Each day, two children from each class wear a Fitbit and steps are recorded daily. At the end of the week the most active class is presented with a certificate and trophy. Year two, were the most active class over Advent Term 1 and as a treat, had an afternoon of boxing. They all enjoyed themselves and it was a great way to have fun and keep fit
KS1 Dance Festival – November 2024
Children from Year 2 were chosen to take part in this festival to engage new audiences in this fun physical activity. Children learnt new dances and the importance of stretching before and after dancing. Two children from each school were awarded the most enthusiastic dancers.
KS2 Ten Pin Panathlon – November 2024
Children from KS2 were chosen to take part in this festival to engage new audiences increasing their physical activity. The intent was to improve the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of those taking part. Out of the 9 schools participating they came 2nd. An amazing result well done!
Years 5/6 Athletics – November 2024
Eighteen children were chosen to represent our school at this indoor athletics festival. The event theme was to develop and compete with the intent to help support individual development within sport. A fantastic result finishing second with individual race wins.
KS2 Boccia Event 2 – October 2024
Two KS2 children took part in this develop and engage event against other schools in the area. Working as part of a team, the intent of this event was to engage new audiences. They did extremely well coming second in their group.
Year 5/6 Basketball – October 2024
Ten children took part in this develop event against other schools in the area. Working as part of a team, the intent of this event was to support individual development within sport, and to promote teamwork.
KS2 Boccia – October 2024
Two KS2 children took part in this develop and engage event against other schools in the area. Working as part of a team, the intent of this event was to engage new audiences. This event was a pathway to the county finals., they did extremely well coming second in their group. Deservedly they won the School Games Value award for most enthusiastic players!
